As you prepare to begin the blogging process, you probably have a few questions bouncing around in your head.
Don’t worry, it’s very normal!
In fact, there are some common questions that almost all beginning bloggers ask, so I’m going to answer you so you know what to expect from this process!
How long does it take to start a blog? While the creative process of choosing a blog topic is difficult to establish, but once you know what you want to write about, you can finish the technical process of starting a blog in just 20-30 minutes. This is really easier than you think!
Is it expensive to start a blog? Not! While the method I’m suggesting isn’t 100% free, you can start your blog for ~ $ 80 for the entire first year, which drops below $ 7 per month. Can’t I use one of those free platforms to start a blog?
Free platforms are good for hobby blogging. But the truth is that you have no control with the free platforms, and if they were closed, you may not lose your blog. You will know a lot about all these topics in this guide. But before delving into the naughty and thankful details, I’d like to give you a bird’s-eye view of the actual technical steps you’ll need to take to launch a blog.
In addition to the creative aspect of choosing what to blog about, here are the steps that you will need approximately 30-30% to do online:
- Register a domain name: This is the permanent address of your blog on the Internet.
- Purchase website hosting: This is the engine that really powers your blog.
- Install WordPress: This is the best platform to create a blog.
- Set up your blog and start writing: That’s the fun part!

Step 1: Choose a topic: is your blog fun or for money?
If you plan on creating a blog just for fun, then you don’t need to read this section because it’s easy to choose a topic:
This is your interest!
But if you have monetary expectations for your blog, things can get a little more complicated. Look, sometimes you need to write about what you don’t like the most, what will do something to make money.
And because it’s difficult to change your blog theme later, if your ultimate goal is monetization, you should strive to find out if you have audience and monetization options before creating your blog. Try to answer these three questions:
1. Do I enjoy writing on this topic?
There is no way to avoid this fact. It takes time to create a blog. I don’t mean the technical part. Too easy. But once you start your blog, turning it into something that regular visitors find takes some time. For this reason, it is important that you choose a topic that you can see yourself writing about in the long run.
Sure, you might be interested today. But are you still going to post happy writing on this subject even after two months, even if your blog doesn’t receive thousands of visitors? If you are not passionate, it is a difficult fight constantly posting new posts.
2. Are other people also interested in this topic?
If you’ve come across a topic you know you’ll be passionate about in the future, this is for the next day. “Am I as passionate about this topic as the others?”
This is very simple.
If you finally want to be able to create an audience, it helps if you already know that people are interested in your topic. Don’t worry: you don’t need to be able to read your mind to do it. There are actually some useful free internet search tools that can help you discover if there are interested viewers:
KWFinder: This free tool provides you with a “keyword” entry to see how popular it is. A keyword is essentially any phrase that people search for on Google. If many people are Googling this topic then you can definitely be a good size audience. Try to think of the words that best describe your topic, then enter them in the box and click Find Keywords.
You should see a bunch of results with a number indicating how many people search for that term per month. Ideally, you want to see numbers with thousands of monthly searches. For example, the topic of this post (a very popular topic) receives over 110,000 searches per month:
Your blog will likely cover several possible “keywords”, so it’s a good idea to repeat this process for different topics that your blog can cover and if you need more help, be sure to check out our detailed keyword research guide.
Facebook Groups: Facebook provides a great way to measure interest in your chosen topic. Try looking at Facebook groups that cover a similar topic and see how many active members they have. If you find a group with thousands of members, it’s a good sign that you have an audience interested in your topic:
Google Trend: This tool is slightly easier to use and allows you to quickly see if interest in your chosen topic increases or decreases (growth is better!).
3. Can I make money with this topic?
If you are creative enough, it is possible to earn money from most subjects. But some topics are certainly more favorable for monetization than others. This example is a type of commercial, but if you had a popular blog about strategies to make better use of credit cards.
You can bet you have a credit card knocking on your door to throw money away. Companies have a burden. If you plan to make money from your blog, try answering questions like:
- Are there companies you would like to pay to contact my audience?
- Can other blogs covering this topic find monetization opportunities?
- Can I get my product to go ahead as an e-book, so people are interested in buying?

Step 2: choose a blog platform: I recommend WordPress
If you want to start a blog, there is only one platform that I recommend today:
WordPress is not only reading this blog, but it also authorizes 33% of all websites on the Internet. Yes! More than a quarter of every website you use runs on WordPress. So whether you have heard of WordPress or not, I can guarantee you have used a WordPress powered website at some point in your life.
Why is WordPress the best platform to start a blog?
If you’re not surprised by WordPress’ impressive market share, here are some solid reasons why WordPress is the best platform to start your blog:
- It’s easy to use: WordPress is simple enough that even people without technical knowledge can post blog posts.
- It has a huge community: WordPress is so popular that it is easy to get help if you ever have problems.
- It’s easy to add functionality: Due to things called “themes” and “plugins,” it’s easy to change the look and feel of your blog without requiring any special technical knowledge (more on that later!)
However, you shouldn’t use WordPress.com
Here’s the confusing part about WordPress:
Actually, there are two different platforms called “WordPress“:
- WordPress.org: This is what I suggest. It is a non-profit open source software developed by a large community. It is often referred to as the self-hosted version.
- WordPress.com: This is a profitable service based on open source software WordPress.org.
WordPress.com allows you to create a basic blog for free. but:
- You are not in full control of your website, which means that you are never really 100% of your blog.
- Customizing your website is difficult because you cannot access WordPress plugins or themes unless you pay for an expensive business plan.
- com sets some restrictions on how you can monetize your site.
With WordPress.org, you install free WordPress software on your own web server, which means you have 100% control of your website. For starters, it’s a bit more complicated, but it’s definitely worth the extra effort.
In addition to owning everything, you can create any twist you want and monetize it however you want. Here’s the bottom line: If you’re serious about your blog, a better option than using WordPress.com is to use WordPress.com, even WordPress.com “free” (but limited)) Also with the blog offer.
Step 3: register a domain name
Now that we’ve learned how to choose a blogging topic and platform, it’s time to start investigating the technical details of blogging:
Your domain name
Your domain name has two main purposes:
- This is the permanent address of your blog on the Internet.
- Once you’ve set everything up, anyone can type their domain name into their browser’s address bar and access your site from anywhere in the world.
- This is the brand of your blog. Usually.
- Your domain name will be similar to your blog name.
- So choosing a domain name is a very important brand decision.
What makes For a good domain name?
Much of this is personal choice and brand. For example, two of the most popular websites, Google and Facebook, have very unique names that would be difficult to generate with any “formula”. As those examples show, you will find many successful sites that break these rules. But overall, here are some good guidelines:
- Pick something that is relevant: Picking a name that has something to do with your topic helps people understand what your website is about. For example, this blog is about blogging, so – .com
- Make it brandable, too: You want something that makes branding easier so people can remember your blog.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers: Avoid the desire to get creative with dashes or numbers. Hard to remember people!
- Use a .com if possible: While other domain extensions are becoming more popular, it is better to choose a .com domain name if possible. If you get a great domain name using something else, then it’s okay to ignore this one.

How to find domain names that are available?
Here’s the tricky part about the domain names. Each domain name can only be owned by one person at a time. Think about it: if someone could go out and buy Facebook.com, the internet would be in total chaos, right?
So, to buy a domain name, you must find an “available” one. That is, you need to find a domain name that no one else currently has. This can be a difficult task, but there are many tools to make the job easier.
First of all, to quickly check if a domain name is available, instant domain search is almost easy. Just type in the domain name you want and the tool will tell you if it’s available. If you maintain domain names that are no longer available.
You can also turn to Blog Name Generator. A blog name generator basically returns to a list of relevant domain names that are guaranteed to be available. Everyone enters a word related to their topic and these tools will do the rest:

How to Purchase your chosen domain name
Once you find a domain name that you like and have available, it’s time to buy it! While it is possible to register a domain name directly through your web host, I don’t recommend this approach for a few reasons:
- This creates a point of failure for your website as both your domain and your web hosting are in one place. This is bad for security.
- This makes it harder to move hosts that you probably want to do as your blog begins to grow in popularity.
Instead, I recommend a separate service called Namecheap because it is:
- Secure: This is important because if someone ever has access to your domain name, they have full control over your blog.
- Affordable: Namecheck only charges $ 10 per year to register a .com domain, while most hosts increase the price (even if they give you the first year “free”).
- Convenient: registering with Namecheap means you can easily control your domain name if you ever need to change anything in the future.
Here is how to buy your domain name:
- Go to Namecheap
- Enter your chosen domain name in the search box:
- Click the button to add it to your cart.
- Add domain to cart
- Click View Cart to access your cart.
- Confirm the order and complete the payment process
- Confirm your domain order
Once you pay, you now officially have your own domain name! Now, you just need to connect it to a web hosting.

While a domain name is the permanent address of your website, your web hosting is the one that really powers your website, so when someone visits that address, they have a real website to greet them. It is like the engine that drives the car. Without an engine, a car will not move! And without web hosting, your blog won’t work either!

Step 5: Login to WordPress (pre-installed with DreamHost)
As I mentioned before, the best thing about DreamHost is that you don’t have to install WordPress. It comes pre-installed in your account so you can start your blog quickly. Once the registration process is complete.
You will receive an email from DreamHost notifying you that your account has been set up and providing you with your login credentials. Sign in to your DreamHost account. On the home page, you’ll see a blue box to help you sign in to your WordPress dashboard:
- Login to wordpress.
- Click Open WordPress Editor.

A quick tour of the WordPress dashboard
The WordPress dashboard is essentially a dashboard for your entire blog. This is where you:
- Write your blog post
- Choose the look of your blog
- Add functionality to your blog
- Moderate comment on your blog

Accessing your dashboard is easy:
Append/ wp-admin at the end of your domain name (for example.com/wp-admin) Sign in with the credentials set with DreamHost in the previous step. Once you’re logged in, you should see something like this:

- A – This is the area where you really write and manage your blog posts
- B – This field allows you to create a different type of content called “Pages”. It is good to contact more pages about things
- C – This is where you can control how your blog looks using “themes”
- D – This is where you control how your blog works using “plugins”

Step 6: choose a WordPress theme (how your blog looks)
The WordPress theme determines how your blog looks and to some extent how some parts of your blog work. This is like the clothes on your website. And, just like you can’t be naked in public, your blog needs a theme to work on.
Your blog will come with a default theme, but most people want to choose their own theme to make their own blog. Here is the good news. Because WordPress is so popular, there are thousands of free and premium themes to choose from.
Here are some great places to find the topic:
- WordPress.org – This is the official WordPress theme directory. Contains thousands of free themes.
- ThemeForest – This is a popular marketplace with thousands of premium themes.
- StudioPress – This is a great provider of premium themes. I have used many of his themes over the years.
Alternatively, you can check out our curated collection of free and premium blogging themes, free WordPress themes. Although some people will try to scare you into paying for a premium theme, there’s nothing that naturally makes a premium theme better than a free theme.
Premium themes often have better design and features, but are not universal. So if you’re on a tight budget, feel free to start with one of the free WordPress.org themes or from the blog post above!
How to install your new theme
To install your theme:
- Go to Appearance → Themes in your WordPress Dashboard
- Click Add New
- For free themes found at WordPress.org, search for the theme by name and click Install.
- For premium themes, click Upload Theme and upload your theme’s zip file

Once you configure your theme by any method, be sure to click the Activate button to activate your website!
How to customize your theme, make it yours
Once you activate your chosen theme, you can go one step further and customize it to be yours. Most themes now support something called customizers. With the Customizer, you can modify your theme using simple options in a limited live environment.
That is, you will be able to see the changes to your blog in real time, but those changes cannot be made live until they are published. To access this area, go to Appearance → Customize in your WordPress dashboard:

- Menus: Set up your site’s navigation menu so people can easily find their way to your blog.
- Widget: You can add cool features to your blog sidebar, such as a list of your latest blog posts.
Step 7: Choose some WordPress plugins (how your blog Functions)
While the themes are mostly about looks, the plugins are all about functionality. They add a lot to you, from a simple contact form to a complete e-commerce store! And unlike the theme, you can use as many plugins as you want (although you should try to use only the plugins you need).
You can find free and premium plugins for your site.
Here are some good places where you can start:
- WordPress.org – This is the official directory of free plugins with over 50,000 different plugins to choose from.
- Code Canyon – A popular market for premium WordPress plugins.
The plugins that every blogger needs
While there are plenty of plugins that provide niche functionality, there are also some special types of plugins that are highly needed by every blogger. To install WordPress plugins:
- Go to plugins → add new to your WordPress dashboard
- To get free plugins found at WordPress.org, search for the plugin by name and click Install Now
- For premium plugins, click on upload plugin and load zip file.
Once you install a plugin, be sure to Activate it. Then you can read the plugin instructions to know exactly how to use the plugin on your site.
Step 8: create some essential blog pages
Oh, is that so! We have done it Now, you are finally ready to start creating content for your blog. But before writing your first blog post (the next one!), It’s a good idea to create a few main pages. Unlike a post, a “page” has no post date. This is something that always happens. At least, the pages for most blogs are:

You may have more information you want to share, but those two pages provide a good baseline to give readers the information they need.
How to create a new page in WordPress
To create a new page:
- Go to Pages → Add new to your WordPress dashboard
- Enter your page title in the box above
- Enter the content of your page in the text editor
- Click Publish when done
Step 9: write and publish your first blog post
And now for the super fun part: you’re finally ready to write your first blog post and share your thoughts with the world! Creating a blog post on WordPress is almost similar to creating a page. There are some adjustments at this time.
First, head to Posts → Add New. then:
- Enter the title of your blog post at the top.
- Enter the text of your blog post in the editor box.
- If you need to add bold, italics and more, you can use the formatting toolbar.
- It’s like Microsoft Word!
- If necessary, click the Add Media button to upload and insert images.
- Choose a category or add a new one to the right.
- Optional: add some tags that describe your blog post on the right.
- When you’re done, click Publish.

Now, I know that not everyone cares about making money. But do I think most people will not be entitled to a minimum income from their blog. Fortunately, there are tons of different routes you can use to monetize your blog.
These are some of the most popular options:
With Affiliate marketing, you get a commission for recommending a product or service to potential customers. Ok, you refer people to products you believe in and get paid as a thank you.
You can sell ads directly to companies in your niche or use a service like Google AdSense to serve you ads. Although Google AdSense is not always super attractive, it is an easy and practical way in which you can generate at least some income on your blog.
Offer a service
Many successful bloggers make money by offering a service that is tied to their niche. For example, many other bloggers lead full-time lives writing blog posts just for other people. And I bet if you have a quality blog, you can do the same!
